  • What Can You Drive with a Class B Licence? The Differences Between Licence Categories

Since the 2016 regulation that aligned Türkiye’s system with European standards, driving licences have been divided into 17 separate categories — and the one the overwhelming majority of candidates enrol for is Class B. Yet in our classrooms we see the same pattern every single term: most new candidates cannot say precisely which vehicles their future licence will and will not cover.

That gap matters, because choosing the wrong category costs you time, money and a second course enrolment. In this comparison guide we put Class B side by side with the other main categories, so you can see exactly where its limits are — and decide with confidence before you sign up.

Türkiye’s Licence Category System at a Glance

The current system groups vehicles by weight, passenger capacity and vehicle type. Motorcycles sit in the M, A1, A2 and A categories; cars and light vehicles in B1, B and BE; trucks in C1 and C; buses and minibuses in D1 and D; tractors and work machines in F and G.

Each category also has its own minimum age and experience requirements. A real example from our front desk: Zeynep, a Bilkent University student, came in asking for “a motorcycle and car licence together”. Once we mapped her plan onto the category table, she saw that her age and goals pointed to a combined A2 + B programme — a decision that took five minutes with the right table in front of her. The age rules for every category are covered in detail in our guide to licence age limits and special cases.

📊 The System in Numbers
17 licence categories in the current system, in force since 2016.
3,500 kg — the maximum authorised mass a Class B holder may drive.
8 passenger seats (plus the driver) — the passenger ceiling for Class B.
18 — the minimum age for a Class B licence.

What Exactly Does a Class B Licence Cover?

Class B authorises you to drive motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg and up to 8 passenger seats in addition to the driver’s. In practice that means every ordinary passenger car, SUVs, pick-ups within the weight limit, and the large majority of panel vans and camper vans on the market.

It also lets you tow a light trailer of up to 750 kg. Consider Emre from Çankaya, one of our recent graduates: he bought a small camping trailer for summer trips, and his standard Class B licence covered the whole setup — no extra category needed. Had he chosen a heavier caravan, he would have crossed into Class BE territory.

One more practical detail: if you take your driving test in an automatic-transmission vehicle, your licence is restricted to automatics. Which route suits you is a genuine decision point — we compare both in our guide on choosing between automatic and manual transmission.

Class B vs the Other Categories: Full Comparison

Here is the comparison that answers the question in the title at a glance. When Selin, an office manager from Ümitköy, asked us whether she could drive her company’s staff minibus with her Class B licence, this table gave her the answer in seconds — she needed D1, not B.

CategoryTypical VehiclesKey LimitMinimum Age
M / A1 / A2 / AMopeds and motorcyclesEngine size and power tiers (A1 up to 125cc)16–20 by tier
BCars, SUVs, light vans, small campersUp to 3,500 kg; 8 passenger seats; 750 kg trailer18
BECar + heavy trailer or caravanTrailers beyond the 750 kg allowance18
C1 / CLight and heavy trucksAbove 3,500 kg (C1 capped at 7,500 kg)18–21 by tier
D1 / DMinibuses and busesMore than 8 passenger seats21–24 by tier
F / GTractors and work machinesAgricultural and construction use18

Notice the pattern: the higher categories are separated from Class B by weight, passenger count or vehicle type — never by brand or engine power of an ordinary car. That is why a compact hatchback and a large luxury SUV both sit comfortably inside the same Class B.

💡 Did You Know?
Under the current rules, Class B holders may also be permitted to use light motorcycles in the A1 (up to 125cc) class once certain conditions are met. Because these conditions have changed over the years, always confirm the current requirements from official announcements before riding — as of August 2026, this is one of the most frequently updated corners of the regulation.

Where Class B Ends: Common Misconceptions

The most expensive mistakes come from assumptions, not from the rules themselves. Last term Burak, a new graduate from Balgat, assumed his fresh Class B licence covered his friend’s mid-size motorcycle — it did not, because motorcycles above the light-motorcycle tier require an A2 or A licence regardless of what car you can drive.

Three boundaries trip people up again and again. First, a vehicle over 3,500 kg — even a large camper — needs C1, not B. Second, carrying more than 8 passengers moves you into D1 territory, even for a short unpaid favour. Third, a trailer heavier than 750 kg calls for BE, even when the towing car itself is an ordinary sedan.

The good news: none of these upgrades means starting from zero. Holding a Class B licence gives you the driving foundation and theory base that makes an additional category a much shorter journey.

Which Category Fits Your Plans?

The right question is not “which licence is best?” but “what will I actually drive in the next five years?” Here is the quick decision path we walk through with every candidate at enrolment:

🗓️ Decision Roadmap
Step 1: Daily commuting and family use only → Class B answers every need.
Step 2: Caravan or heavy-trailer plans → plan for BE on top of B.
Step 3: Motorcycle in the picture → add A1/A2 according to your age and the engine size.
Step 4: Professional driving goals (truck, minibus, bus) → map out the C or D path and its age requirements early.
Step 5: Undecided → start with Class B; it is the foundation every other category builds on.

A concrete scenario we see every September: a student who has just moved to Ankara for university wants a licence “for everything, just in case”. Nine times out of ten, the honest answer is that Class B alone covers their entire student life — and the paperwork is simpler than they fear. The full document checklist is in our guide to the documents required for a licence application.

The Takeaway

  • Class B is wide but bounded: up to 3,500 kg, up to 8 passenger seats, and a trailer up to 750 kg.
  • The system has 17 categories: weight, passenger count and vehicle type — not brand or engine power — decide which one you need.
  • Motorcycles are a separate track: anything beyond the light-motorcycle tier requires A2 or A, whatever car licence you hold.
  • Upgrades build on B: BE, C or D later on is a shorter path once you hold a Class B licence.
  • Decide by your five-year plan: pick the category for the vehicles you will actually drive, not for hypothetical ones.
